Potosi Silver Mines Tour “Cerro Rico” , (Half day)
We’ll pick you up from your hotel at 08:30. The visit starts at 09:00, lasts 2 to 3 hours, and departs daily.
First, we visit the miners’ market, where you can buy coca leaves, cigarettes, Coca-Cola, water, dynamite, and fuses to take as gifts for the miners.
Before climbing the hill, we’ll provide all the equipment needed for the mine visit. You can leave anything you won’t need in secure, locked storage.
You will explore galleries and tunnels carved from stone over 450 years ago, passing through more than 3 km of interconnected mine tunnels and descending through 5 levels, some 20 to 30 meters apart, going as deep into the mountain as you feel comfortable. A second guide is always available if anyone in your group wants to turn back early.
Our knowledgeable English-speaking guide will offer fascinating insights into the lives of the 980 miners who work here. You’ll also witness a live dynamite explosion and hear about the history of the mines, their economy, and the miners’ culture and working conditions.
We recommend eating a good breakfast before you leave. Wear old clothes and bring a handkerchief to filter the dusty air. For extra energy, pack water, soda, chocolate bars, bananas, and other snacks.
